Two weeks after returning, I won my first regional title. What I built there, no gym in France could have given me.

Is Dagestan safe in 2026?

Secure panoramic view of Makhachkala and the Caspian Sea, main training zone of the MKR Dagestan camps.

The question of safety in Dagestan and Chechnya comes up systematically before every registration. That is legitimate. Here is a factual overview, based on our on-the-ground experience since 2018, on official figures and on feedback from more than 200 Western participants who have come through MKR.

This article deliberately distinguishes the media image of the region from the operational reality of the sports camps. Both are true, but not at the same level.

THE MEDIA IMAGE: WHAT YOU HAVE READ OR HEARD

When you search "Dagestan safety" on Google, you come across three types of content: official advisories (France's Foreign Ministry, British Foreign Office, US State Department), geopolitical articles on the post-2000 Caucasus, and old reports on the Islamist insurgency of 2000-2015. The whole thing colors the image of a permanent war zone.

The 2026 reality is different, and it is documented. Dagestan has not seen a major attack since 2018. Makhachkala has become a recognized sports capital, regularly hosting UFC preparation camps. Russian domestic tourism is growing strongly there. Chechnya, under the Kadyrov government, has an urban crime rate officially lower than that of Moscow.

THE OFFICIAL ADVICE FROM FRANCE'S FOREIGN MINISTRY: HOW TO READ IT

France's Foreign Ministry classifies the Russian Caucasus (Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, North Ossetia) as orange to red depending on districts. It is a diplomatic precautionary advice that uniformly covers a vast territory without distinguishing stable urban capitals from sensitive border zones.

Concretely, this advice does not mean "do not go there under any circumstances". It means "inform the consulate of your presence and avoid border zones". MKR systematically communicates each participant's program to the French embassy in Moscow before departure, and provides the Ariane form for those who want to register individually.

To note: international sports delegations (UFC teams, national wrestling federations, ONE Championship) that travel to Makhachkala or Grozny to prepare their fights do not stop at this advice. It is a strong indicator.

WHAT MKR PARTICIPANTS ACTUALLY LIVE SINCE 2018

Western and Dagestani athletes on a relaxed break in the MKR training gym in Makhachkala, peaceful professional atmosphere
Break between two sessions in Makhachkala. The atmosphere no one shows you in reports on the Caucasus.

Since the first camp organized in 2018, more than 200 Western participants have come through MKR. The factual record:

  • 0 geopolitical safety incident (no attack, no assault linked to Western profile, no abusive police control, no hostage taking, no major consular problem).
  • 3 sports injuries requiring an early return, all covered by the mandatory repatriation insurance.
  • 1 isolated food poisoning (outside MKR structure, during an individual outing to a non-recommended restaurant).
  • 2 early returns for personal reasons (family bereavement, professional emergency in Europe).

This record is in line with what you observe at any intensive sports camp in Europe or the United States. Injuries are the leading cause of early return. Not geopolitics.

THE MKR SAFETY PROTOCOL IN 5 LEVELS

The MKR protocol covers each participant from departure from Europe to return. It is articulated in 5 successive levels.

Pyramid of the MKR safety protocol in 5 levels LEVEL 1BEFORE DEPARTURE: video briefing, visa, insurance, medical cert. LEVEL 2TRANSFER: MKR driver, never an unknown taxi after 10 p.m. LEVEL 3DAILY LIFE: permanent French-speaking team, marked zones LEVEL 4EMERGENCY ON SITE: sports doctor within 30 min, partner hospital LEVEL 5REPATRIATION: insurance, daily Istanbul-Caucasus flights MKR PROTOCOL 5 LEVELS, FROM DEPARTURE TO RETURN
The 5-level protocol that covers each participant from Europe to camp and back.

Level 1: Before departure

Safety briefing by video call with Ruslan or a member of the team. Verification of repatriation insurance (mandatory), passport valid 6 months minimum, Russian visa. Communication of the contact details of the French consulate in Moscow. For sensitive profiles (journalists, Russian dual nationals, active military), possible refusal of registration after case-by-case evaluation.

Level 2: Airport transfer

Domestic flight Istanbul-Makhachkala (Wrestling camp in Dagestan) or Istanbul-Grozny (MMA camp in Chechnya) included in the package. Airport-camp transfer by MKR driver known to the team, never in an unknown taxi, never after 10 p.m. Average duration: 1h30 to Makhachkala, 30 minutes to Grozny.

Level 3: Daily camp life

Supervised accommodation (apartments or sports residence), grouping of Western participants, French-speaking team present permanently in the premises. No solo travel in urban zones after 10 p.m. Supervised group excursions on Sundays (Sulak canyon, Sarykum dune, Gamsutl village, Akhmad Kadyrov mosque in Grozny). See our Dagestan page and Chechnya page for details.

Level 4: Emergency on site

MKR emergency number reachable 24/7 (WhatsApp and phone). Local sports doctor on call within 30 minutes. Partnership with a private hospital in Makhachkala and in Grozny, French-speaking accompaniment. Procedure documented and posted in each accommodation.

Level 5: Repatriation

Mandatory repatriation insurance subscribed before departure. Daily flights Istanbul-Makhachkala and Istanbul-Grozny. Evacuation procedure tested in 2022 and 2024 (two cases of sports injuries, effective repatriation within 48h).

THE REAL RISKS TO PREPARE FOR

Risk number 1 is not geopolitical. It is sports injuries linked to the intensity of sparring. You will do at least 12 sessions per week. The probability of a sprain, dislocation or concussion is real. See our article how to prepare your first camp for physical preparation.

Risk number 2 is road accidents (taxis, group moves). MKR uses identified and trained drivers, never unknown ride-share services. If you order a Yandex Taxi (Russian Uber equivalent) alone after 10 p.m., it is under your responsibility.

Risk number 3 is food and water health. MKR cuisine is prepared on site under supervised conditions, with no known issues on 200+ participants. However, beware of street restaurants or non-recommended cafeterias.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

France's Foreign Ministry advises against the Russian Caucasus. Why does MKR continue to operate there?
The Foreign Ministry advice is a general diplomatic opinion that covers the entire Russian Caucasus region in orange or red depending on the districts. This opinion does not distinguish stable urban zones (Makhachkala, Grozny center) from sensitive border zones. Concretely, UFC athletes, ONE Championship and international sports delegations regularly travel to Makhachkala to prepare their fights for more than 15 years, without incident. MKR operates in this marked-out sports context, not in a generalized tourist mode. We take the Foreign Ministry advice seriously for the zones we forbid our participants (administrative borders, mountains outside supervised zones), but not as an absolute block on the recognized sports capitals.
What zones are authorized and forbidden by MKR?
Authorized and daily frequented zones: Makhachkala (Wrestling in Dagestan), Kaspiysk and Khasavyurt (training moves), Grozny center (MMA in Chechnya). Zones forbidden by the MKR team to our participants: all administrative border zones, mountainous regions outside supervised excursions (Sulak canyon, Sarykum dune, Gamsutl village), solo taxi rides outside MKR after 10 p.m. If a participant wants to explore a zone outside the perimeter, it is under their own responsibility and after explicit agreement from the team.
What happens concretely in case of medical emergency or problem?
The MKR team has a 3-level protocol. Level 1 (small injury, stomach ache): internal handling, local sports doctor on call within 30 minutes. Level 2 (moderate injury, suspected fracture): transfer to the partner private hospital in Makhachkala or Grozny, French-speaking accompaniment. Level 3 (vital emergency): immediate repatriation via insurance subscribed mandatorily before departure (Allianz Assistance, Mondial Assistance or equivalent). The MKR emergency contact is reachable 24/7 on WhatsApp and phone.
Have Western athletes had problems on site in recent years?
Since 2018 and more than 200 MKR participants, no safety incident linked to the geopolitical environment. The only cases of early returns are linked to: sports injuries (3 cases, all well handled by insurance), personal family problems in Europe (2 cases), an isolated food poisoning (1 case, outside MKR structure). No case of theft, assault, abusive police control or problem linked to the Western profile of participants.
And the war in Ukraine? How does it affect Dagestan and Chechnya?
Dagestan and Chechnya are more than 1,500 km from the front, outside the direct conflict zone. Mobilization has affected some rural regions but has no operational impact on the sporting life of the capitals. UFC competitions continue (Islam Makhachev, Khabib in coaching, Khamzat Chimaev), the MKR partner gyms run at full capacity, the international flights Istanbul-Makhachkala and Istanbul-Grozny are operating daily. If the situation were to change abruptly, MKR would postpone or cancel the affected camps with full refund according to our T and Cs.
What insurance to take and what should it cover?
Mandatory insurance to subscribe before departure. Minimum coverage: medical repatriation from Russia, medical costs up to 100,000 EUR minimum, combat sport civil liability, loss or theft of luggage. Companies validated by MKR participants: Allianz Travel, Mondial Assistance, Chapka Direct, AXA Assistance, Mutuaide. Remember to check that your contract does not contain exclusions on combat sports or on Russia. If so, take a complementary intensive sport contract.
What about women? Is the region suitable for female participants?
MKR has welcomed to date only a minority of female participants (not by discrimination but because the sport practiced remains majority male on site). For women who want to come: no operational problem. Free training attire in the gyms, urban dress code similar to any Russian city (no obligation to wear a veil, no men/women separation in public spaces). Dagestan remains a majority Muslim republic, modest behavior is appreciated but nothing is imposed. If you are an interested female fighter, contact Ruslan directly to discuss the context.
